Biographical / Historical

The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) was first incorporated in April of 1834 to serve as a faster route between Brooklyn and Boston. LIRR continued to expand in the late 1800s to provide service to Nassau and Suffolk counties. Financial pressures followed LIRR throughout the late 1800’s. In 1900 Pennsylvania Railroad purchased controlling interest and began electrifying the lines. Finally, in 1966 New York State purchased LIRR from the Pennsylvania Railroad and incorporated it into the Metropolitan Transportation Agency (MTA).
